Purpose of the Project
6 Million Pages is a project designed to promote the integration of Holocaust Education and
Literacy.
It is a project created to demonstrate the power of reading for understanding an era in history challenged by war, economic unrest, and intolerance of diversity.
It is a project to foster an awareness of quality literature for children and adults.
It is a project to encourage REMEMBRANCE.
Note From the Project Developer
After teaching many courses on aspects of the Holocaust centered on using literature as a guide for understanding aspects of the Holocaust, I discovered the work of students and teachers at Whitwell Middle School in Tennessee. The result of their studies was the building of a Children's Holocaust Museum, which I visited on a steamy August morning. Standing and looking at their butterfly mosaics I challenged myself to do something that would promote Holocaust education, develop literacy in children, and encourage reading for all ages. While taking pictures around Whitwell the idea of reading 6 Million Pages came to me. I pitched the idea to a few people, and let the project come to life. I cannot predict when the 6 Million Page mark will be reached. I only hope that it is so all readers may pause to whisper: “Never Again.”
