Zoom Tips & Tricks

We use Zoom for video conferencing selected events and meetings at CEEBJ. With Zoom you can watch and listen to the event on your computer or smartphone.  And for some events, you will have the option to chat live with the presenter or even become a presenter yourself using your device's camera and microphone.

Click here for a quick tutorial on how to get started using Zoom on your computer or device.

Don't yet have Zoom? Here's how to install it...

  • The fastest and easiest way to install Zoom is to click on the blue Zoom icon above.  If you don't yet have Zoom, it will automatically start the correct installation for your device, and you can proceed to the next step.  If you do have Zoom, then the Zoom meeting will start, and you're all set to go.  Or, to manually install Zoom, go to zoom.us/download, and then go to the next step.
  • One the installation has begun: On a smartphone, you will be directed to the app store to download "Zoom Cloud Meetings".  On a computer (desktop or laptop), select "Zoom Client For Meetings", then install it after it's been downloaded.
  • After the above installation process is complete, you will have the option to sign in or to sign up for a free account.  You do not need to do either; just skip to the next step.  However, if you want to host your own Zoom meetings in the future (e.g., to meet with friends and family), then sign up for your free Zoom account.
  • At this point, Zoom should be running on your device and you should see an option to Join or Join a Meeting.  This means you have successfully installed Zoom and that you're ready to participate in Zoom meetings. You are done with the installation procedure.

Tips for participating in Zoom meetings

  • Some of these tips involve using the Zoom meeting controls.  On a computer, the controls are found at the bottom of the screen.  On a smart device, tap on the screen and the controls will appear.
  • Mute - Unless you are the meeting organizer, please mute your microphone; this is especially important when there are multiple participants. You can unmute when called on to make a comment.
  • Stop Video - This option turns off your camera or webcam. You can still see others, but they cannot see you.
  • Chat - This opens a panel where you can type a question or make a comment. Within the panel, you will have options for chatting with everyone or selecting a specific participant.
  • Leave Meeting - When the meeting ends (or when you need to go), click here or simply close the Zoom app or window.
