Special Tisha b’Av service with connection to COVID-19 

Tisha b’Av (the ninth day of Av) marks one of the low points in our Jewish calendar.  It commemorates the destruction of the first and second temples, and the beginning of the galut – the exile into the diaspora– which was our Jewish fate until recent history, with the founding of the state of Israel.

We will discuss the pandemic and its relationship to Tisha b’Av. Our online service begins with ma’ariv, the evening service, at 7:30 pm, followed by the chanting of Eicha, the Book of Lamentations. Tisha b’Av is a full fast day from sun-down to sun-down, and is marked by mourning practices.  The evening service is recited with a plaintive tone, and the Book of Lamentations is chanted to a haunting melody.
