2:00 PM - 3:30 PMPresented by Cary Silverstein
Introductory comments by Kenny Stein
Over 80 years ago, Israel’s diamond trade developed from one single plant in Petah Tikva. By 2016, 28% of Israel’s exports were cut diamonds. Our journey starts in Spain in the early 1400s with a proclamation by the Catholic Church excluding Jews from commerce and the handling of money. The forced migration of Jews continued with the Alhambra Decree in 1492 and resulted with many Jews settling in Antwerp. Jews began to settle in this area starting in the 1200s. Eventually, the Dutch East India Company was established in the 1600s.
Grab your passport as we journey together through India, Spain, Portugal, Great Britain, South Africa, and Russia, and witness the development of Israel’s diamond trade. We will meet and learn about the individuals who played key roles in the growth of the international diamond trade.
