Each year we come to the synagogue to recommit ourselves to God and Judaism, ask others for forgiveness for our transgressions, and promise in our prayers to be better in the coming year. As we read in Mishkan Tefillah, “Pray as if everything depended upon God; Act as if everything depended upon you.”.
