Our Code of Ethics
Our Code of Ethics
Executive Summary: The Code of Ethics of Congregation Emanu-El B’ne Jeshurun
The Emanu-El Code of Ethics serves as a framework for our congregation to uphold the highest standards of conduct in our daily lives. It is intended as a living, evolving, document that reflects the belief system of Emanu-El’s leadership and congregants. At the core of this Code of Ethics are the principles of Holiness (K’Dusha), Honesty (Yosher), Honor (K’avod), Compassion (Rachamim), and Justice (Tzedek). It embodies our dedication to ethical conduct, promoting a culture of respect, inclusivity, and integrity. We believe that by adhering to these principles, we can create a positive, and productive environment that allows our congregation to continue to thrive.
Holiness (K’Dusha): We strive to exemplify holiness in our actions and decisions, promoting an environment where inclusivity, dignity, and respect are paramount.
Honesty (Yosher): We should be truthful, sincere, and transparent in our words and actions, while maintaining confidentiality where appropriate.
Honor (K’avod): To maintain transparency and trust, we should be forthright and genuine, exhibit fairness and loyalty in our words and actions, recognize the inherent worth in ourselves and others, and not compromise our principles. Synagogue leadership is expected to act in the best interest of our congregation.
Compassion (Rachamim): Helping others is a fundamental obligation, reflecting our values of empathy, community, and our commitment to foster dignity and respect as we refrain from derogatory speech and bullying.
Justice (Tzedek): Ethical behavior, kindness, and equity are essential to fulfilling our moral and spiritual obligations to treat everyone with dignity and respect, including respect for personal boundaries and maintenance of a safe environment. We work toward a more just society where every individual can thrive.
The complete Emanu-El Code of Ethics is made available to all congregants, staff, and clergy. Visitors and guests are able to see the Code here on the website and upon request from the synagogue office. A standing Emanu-El Ethics Chair and Ethics Committee are in place, along with (1) a process for review and revision of the Code, and (2) procedures to address allegations of unethical behavior based on our Code of Ethics.
Emanu-El strives to ensure that clear guidelines for ethical conduct exist and are understood by all to be an explicit responsibility for participation in our sacred community.
